OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Information of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory on Saturday set off celebrations and protests as jubilant supporters and annoyed opponents of the previous vice chairman took to the streets in California’s main cities.
Supporters of President Donald Trump rallied exterior the state Capitol in Sacramento and marched in Beverly Hills demanding a recount of votes. In the meantime, residents in Oakland threw block events and honked automotive horns as they expressed hometown delight in Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her history-making flip as the primary Black lady elected to the second-highest workplace in the US.
“It is a historic day. We have been ready for this modification for 4 years, and we simply needed to come back out and have a good time with our fellow residents,” stated Brandon Bergmark as he strolled alongside Oakland’s Lake Merritt together with his spouse and two youngsters.
Native leaders sang the praises of Harris, who has deep ties to the Bay Space. The 56-year-old California senator was born in Oakland, raised in Berkeley, and started her political profession as San Francisco’s district lawyer.
“The delight I really feel as a Black lady is tough to place into phrases,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed stated in a press release.
“Daughter of Oakland. You’ve made us so proud — so many tears of pleasure flowing within the City proper now,” Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tweeted about Harris.
